...when the door flies open and a shrill voice breaks the library like silence maintained by the numerous people waiting in line.

Lady Incapable of a Normal Inside Voice: DO YOU HAVE A PHONE BOOK?

Overwhelmed Bank tellers:(in panicked unison) Um....no...(eyes dart frantically at possible phonebook locations) No. We don’t have a phone book.

LIoaNIV: MY CAR BROKE DOWN AND I NEED THE NUMBER FOR THE CHRYSLER DEALER ON REDACTED STREET.

All parties exchange a look of befuddlement.

Me: It’s right there.(points to massive building across street)

Kinja'd!!!

Lady Suddenly Capable of a Maintaining the Projection of Her Voice at an Acceptable Level: Uh...oh....thanks.

As I leave the bank I see her walking directly into the service bay instead of using the front entrance.

Ugh. My mom would do that.

Minus walking into the service bay. Otherwise, something my mom would do, definitely.

Its true. One of my coworkers is in his 60s. Its pretty normal for him to look up a number in the phone book, then call it on his iphone.

“LIoaNIV”. I laughed too hard at that.

But I worked at a bank; in the mailroom and as a teller. My first thought would have been: ROBBERY. Old lady screaming=diversion. I would have pulled the money stack with the alarm trigger in my drawer. My mom also worked at a bank. She took her lunch break one day only to come back and find a cardboard box against the front door. The door was locked and she looked inside to see the other tellers and manager waving at her hysterically to go away. It was a bomb (turns out it was just a box with junk in it). That is how the guys robbed the bank. They were never caught.

Scary stuff

My mother in law would totally do this. I know this because she sent me an email yesterday saying she setup an AppleCare Genius Appointment at her local Apple Store.. And she wants me to “Go through with her” on how to go through the appointment.

She literally wants me to tell her how to walk into an Apple Store. I didn’t respond to the email, lol.

I get one on my doorstep every year or so. Straight into the trash bin, can’t have that shit in my actual house.

I don’t let my parents have technology they really have no understanding of. They both have their own computers, my mom has a dumbphone, and my dad refuses to get any sort of cell phone. All “advanced” technological actions are carried through by myself or my sisters. It just isn’t worth the hassle. I’m tech support for my parents, I wouldn’t want them to get pissed at someone who isn’t paid enough to deal with their hissy fits.

The big thing with my mother in law now is she can’t figure out why both her activity trackers kept breaking/not syncing with her phone.. She went through about three Fitbits before giving up and now she has a UP24 which is giving her issues.

She lost her husband to cancer back in 2001 and has NEVER been able to move on from it (which I think is the cause of the “Damsel in Distress” type of attitude) .. It’s to the point now where she really should go see someone but she won’t...

That’s truly unfortunate. People need to quit being so proud about stuff like this. It’s one thing to be proud of your workmanship and make sure no one can talk smack about your quality of work, it’s something completely different to just never get help for something intangible like that.

Have you tried talking to her about it, or is it one of those “unmentionable” topics?

I can imagine they were pretty freaked at first. This bank has been robbed numerous times.

I don’t talk to her about it, but my wife (her daughter) has. I tend to stay away from the topic as I don’t know what the situation is like and I’m likely to put my foot in my mouth.

I work at a bank and about once a week we will get a phone call from someone asking us to look up numbers of random people/businesses in the phone book for them. Most of the time it is old people but fuck its so annoying. I think to myself “how did you get the number for the bank and you can’t look up the number you actually need”
